Achieving Top Rankings on MSN

MSN, owned by Microsoft, has recently become a popular search engine. Currently MSN search results are based on Inktomi's database (i.e., HotBot). News reports of a few months ago said they were planning to switch to a variation of AltaVista's database in the future although to date, nothing appears to have changed.

Here are some specific tips on getting top rankings on MSN as things stand today:

1. Repeat your targeted keyword or phrase 6 to 8 times on the page. This is called increasing the Web page's "keyword frequency." Avoid the temptation to repeat the keyword too many times.

2. Use 330 to 430 total words on the page.

3. Use the keyword once in the Title area, once in the meta keywords tag, once in the meta description tag, once in the link text, once in the ALT tag (optional), once in a heading tag, and a couple times in the body.

4. Consider linking to a page that has the same name as the keyword you're targeting. Our research shows that top ranking pages on MSN normally have at least one link with the keyword included somewhere in the URL.

5. Keep the keywords as close to the front of the tag or area as possible. This is called establishing "keyword prominence."

Follow the formula above and the odds of achieving a top-10 ranking after your first submission should increase substantially! To submit to MSN, visit the following link:
