REVIEW: The Insider Secrets to Marketing your Business on the Internet by Cory Rudl
Search engine positioning has been voted the most successful way to promote an online business. However, any smart business should implement a mix of solid marketing strategies to be successful. Even though we are considered the "experts" in search engine marketing, we still utilize many other strategies to promote ourselves online such as banner ads, newsletters, affiliates, etc.
I have shelves full of magazines, books, and newsletters on Web marketing that I've collected over the years. Many gave me some good insights into particular topics, but none except Corey Rudl's book cover the entire gambit of Web marketing from A to Z. In fact, it's not a book at all, but two full size binders covering over 500 pages and 25 "lessons" on Web marketing.
I admittedly have yet to read the massive collection from cover to cover, but what I've read so far has been impressive. Cory discusses in detail many of the same tips and techniques that have made OUR business successful over the years, so I know much of what he says really does works. I also came across several ideas I hadn't thought of before which really surprised me.
Luckily, he offers ways to implement these powerful marketing strategies either for free, or at a low cost. Many people call this "guerilla marketing" which is almost mandatory today for small businesses, on a budget, that really want to make it. Even if you're part of a large corporation, you'll find this resource on Web marketing invaluable.
Some of the many topics covered are:
a) Your Web site - The key to success
b) The Sales Process - Creating Killer Copy
c) How to Make Money with Banner Advertising
d) The Power of Email
e) The Right way to use Autoresponders
f) Does Bulk Email Really Work?
g) Newsletters - The Underestimated Marketing Tool
h) Marketing To Newsgroups
i) Marketing Through Online Services (i.e., AOL, MSN, Compuserve)
j) And the list goes on and on.
He'll give you the good, the bad, and the ugly of each technique.
Frankly, I'd be surprised if there's anyone who would not find enough valuable insights into Internet Marketing to pay for the book several times over. I noticed Ralph Wilson of Web Marketing Today also wrote a review of the book a few months back and I was pleased that he drew the same conclusions I did.
Could you find much of the same information on the Web for free? Yes and No. Although I've seen Web sites that talk about many of the topics covered in the book, I've seen few that discuss them in as much detail, and none that offer as much real-world, practical advice that Cory offers. He draws his advice from his own hands on experience running four successful online businesses simultaneously.
You'll find far fewer marketing "theories" in his book and more "I've tried this and it really works, and I've tried that and it simply does not work for these reasons." The price may be considered on the high side at $197, but after you lose $1000 on your first banner ad campaign, or waste hours of work on a fruitless marketing experiment, you'll learn knowledge is always the best investment you can make for your business.
