Yahoo Requires Paid Submission for Two Business Categories

Yahoo has followed Looksmart's move of requiring a fee for reviewing your site for possible inclusion into their directory. In the case of Yahoo, a free submission option remains for all categories except those appearing under:

Yahoo Business to Business Category

Yahoo Shopping & Services Category

Sites submitting to other categories such as regional business listings or non-profit sites may still submit for free. However, even for these sites, you may be better off to pay the $199 to guarantee your site is reviewed within seven days. You're also given more opportunity to appeal any initial rejection of your site when using the paid service. Unfortunately, with the free submissions, Yahoo is notorious for never getting around to reviewing many of those sites.

If you meet their submission guidelines, you'll generally be accepted into the directory when you pay the Express Submission fee. Since Yahoo is the most popular search site on the Web, it can often be the best $199 you spend in your advertising budget. The key is to make sure you submit properly to improve your odds of achieving high rankings. As many of you know, top rankings will be what brings you new traffic, not simply submitting your site.

The directory submission guide in the WebPosition Submitter will help you in achieving higher rankings on the major directories.

Please be aware that it may appear at first glance that you can submit to a number of other Yahoo categories for free such as to the Computers and Internet category if you sell computers. However, the following page on Yahoo warns that if your Web site is commercial (i.e., sells something for profit) then you MUST submit first to the business or shopping category. You may, however, suggest a secondary category to which your site also applies. For more information on where you can submit, click here.

If your business is regional in that you sell only to people in your area, then you can still submit for free. However, if you're wanting to expand and sell all over the country or all over the world, you'd be better off paying the fee and getting into the much more popular business or shopping category, with a secondary listing in a regional or other categories.
