AllTheWeb Becomes The World's "Freshest" Search Engine

This past month, FAST announced a new version of www.AlltheWeb.com that combines real-time indexing of news stories from over three thousand online sources. This has created the freshest Web results of any major search engine, at least in regard to the news. In fact, the updated AlltheWeb can index up to 800 news stories per minute. FAST claims to index current event stories within minutes, rather than many hours or days like other major search engines.

According to the FAST press release, AlltheWeb updates their ENTIRE catalog every 9 to 11 days as compared to 28 days for Google, 45 days for Inktomi, and 45-60 days for AltaVista. In reality, the Google, Inktomi and AltaVista times may be optimistic based on our own observations.

The new battleground has been established and the gauntlet has been thrown down by FAST: "Freshness." This is good news for the search engine positioning industry, which has often waited on search engine's slower updates. Other search engines will now be forced to begin thinking about how fresh their indexes are. Hopefully submissions of new Web sites will appear more quickly in the future. Particularly in the case of new sites, Google may find itself at a disadvantage against FAST's really fast indexing capability. Google relies heavily on link popularity. It takes time to garner links from other sites, therefore making fresh Web sites less likely to show up as quickly on Google.

TIP #1: Having more links to your site can help you get indexed more often and more quickly, particularly on Google. To check your link popularity see:

TIP #2: It may be worthwhile to submit all your company press releases or news articles to one or more of the press submission services on the Web. Although I've not tested any of these services, the technique could be particularly powerful if they can get your story into one or more of the 3000 news sites that AllTheWeb now supports. This could get your news-related content indexed on AlltheWeb within minutes of the news site posting it. However, it's important to carefully integrate keywords into the story so that you have a chance of being found. See WebPosition Gold's Page Critic for optimization advice.
