AskJeeves adds localized search, My Jeeves, and more!
By Brent Winters
Jeeves, the English butler mascot for the Ask Jeeves search engine has been very busy this month serving up a whole host of new features. The company appears to be serious about competing with industry giants Google, Yahoo, and MSN. In fact, you'll notice that Ask Jeeves' home page is very basic, much like Google's "search-centric" approach.
Users can now perform local searches at http://web.ask.com/local. What this means is that, for example, you can limit your search to dry cleaners located in Los Angeles, or tree trimming services in Orlando, Florida.
The Emeryville, CA, based company has also announced the beginning of beta testing for a new "My Jeeves" service. The service is free and allows you to store Web pages into folders and then to search your "personal" content. Microsoft Internet Explorer already offers a very basic search button to scan pages that you've recently visited that are still found within your local cache. It will be interesting to see how Ask Jeeves plans to improve upon this.
Teoma.com, also owned by Ask Jeeves, has released version 3 of its engine boasting 2.5 billion pages in its index. They now index PDF and flash content. Because of the many changes recently, it would be a good idea to check all of your rankings on Teoma and Ask Jeeves as they may have changed.
