Yahoo Announces Desktop Search

In October we reported on the deployment of Google's desktop search tool. Google will now have company in the desktop search space as Yahoo has announced its plans to introduce desktop search.

In contrast to Google's solution, Yahoo's desktop search tool was not developed in house, but is based on technology from X1 Technologies in Pasadena , CA. X1 has been selling its desktop search tool for $74.95, and will continue to do so, even after the deployment of Yahoo's desktop search.

Yahoo's search tool will not use a browser like Google's desktop search, but will instead use a windows based interface. The difference in the interface means that the Yahoo solution will not have web results integrated into the local results, but will include only the local results from the hard drive.

Yahoo is not the only major search engine joining the desktop search club. MSN will introduce its desktop search before year's end and Ask Jeeves plans to begin offering its desktop solution next week.
