SEO for Affiliate Programs

by Curtis Friedl

The days of the 'free money' internet are gone. The idea of tossing a website up and watching the money roll in well, that is nothing more then a fairy tale. Today making money in an affiliate program requires some effort on the part of the affiliate. The internet and affiliate programs are not a get rich quick forum any longer.

To make your efforts in affiliate internet marketing programs as effective as possible you will need to employ a number of marketing strategies. Although you may make a little money if you simply throw a banner ad several places on your site you will not actually generate the traffic and commissions that you desire. You will need to actively be involved in promoting the product.

With that said affiliate programs still remain a valuable avenue to create additional income online. While I will look at two of the commonly used affiliate options there will be many other fundamental ideas of search engine optimization that you will need to employ as part of your online marketing efforts.

There are two basic methods of promoting products on your site. The first and most easily implemented method is to add a button or a link on your site with a piece of tracking information. This will enable you to earn commissions when someone purchases through your link. While this can be very effective when the affiliate link is directly related to the content (articles, videos, worksheets, online tools, etc.) that you have on that page and the surrounding pages it will be much less effective if the content is unrelated to the linked product.

The second avenue is an affiliate site, or Micro website. While the button or link may be added to a few pages of your website, the MicroSite will contain a number of pages of content each one discussing the product that you are marketing and provide a much larger number of conversion opportunities. The MicroSite often designed by the originating product retailer provides the affiliate with a basic site design, some content, and sometimes other benefits.

The Achilles heal of the MicroSite; often duplicated content copied and pasted from the manufactures site or a general turnkey site duplicated among all of the affiliates. These issues often lead to a listing in the supplemental index. This is where Google places sites that are full of content that already appears in their database. To avoid having your site appear in the supplemental index you need to create unique content. There are a number of ways that you can accomplish this.

  • Write review articles about the product.

  • Write tutorial articles or help guides.

  • Avoid doorway pages, interlink the content of your website to ensure the search engine has ample opportunity to locate all of it.

  • Use the Keywords for one page as the text link from another, as I did above with supplemental index.

When the average consumer considers a purchase, often they will search for reviews and comments about the product or service. By adding information like this you will be creating the essential information that the search engines are seeking, while avoiding the creation of duplicate content. These additions to your pages will feed the appetite of the search engine, and the commission and rewards that you receive will exceed the efforts that go into creating this content.

While the wild days of the internet maybe behind us there is no reason to believe that a healthy living can not be made online. Every Online retailer and affiliate programs marketers need to pay closer attention to a few simple rules to enable their business success. Most importantly is to have content, as others frequently say "Content is King". Make sure that the content is relevant to the products being sold, and work hard to ensure that it is unique. Reviews and tutorial are helpful, as well as the creation of a strong link structure between the pages. Ensure that you also follow the fundamental ideas of search engine optimization to aid you in reaching points of better visibility with the search engines.
