Dmoz Not Dead, Opens Official Open Directory Project Blog.
By Scott Goodyear
From time to time you'll hear that Dmoz, aka The Open Directory Project, is dead. This is because it is near impossible to get into the directory. After submitting a site to Dmoz, it can take days or even years if you are actually accepted for inclusion into this volunteer driven directory. Even if it takes years, there just isn't clear communication between Dmoz volunteers and the status of your application.
Real or link bait, there is an interesting discussion about Dmoz editors at on Shoemoney's website. His post states that: "A while back I got a email from a guy claiming to be a DMOZ editor saying that I had to pay him $5,000.00 or he would have my site: shoemoney.com removed from the dmoz." This caused quite a stir in the SEO world. From time to time you will also find Dmoz editors or those purporting to be Dmoz editors advertising that they can get you into a Dmoz listing, a Dmoz editorship, or desperate webmasters bidding for a Dmoz listing.

Perhaps because of these and other issues, Dmoz has launched it's official Open Directory Project Blog, which I think is great regardless of the reason for starting it.
According to Bob Keating, Managing Editor at Dmoz, this is an attempt to be more open with webmasters about Dmoz, a means to recruit new editors and more. As I like to often say, it will be interesting to see how this develops...
A post by photofox asks: "Will it still take more then a year to listed in DMOZ ??? Will you be able to tell us 'IF' our sites have been reviewed and 'IF' our sites are rejected or is it still a guessing game on the part of submitters?"
Krishan Singh replies: "Depends on the category : ) This is something that we hear all the time. Conversely, there are comments and elation about sites that get in quickly. You're comment about status of submissions is a fair one and something that we are looking at improving."
Assuming that Singh is an editor, this is certainly a hopeful reply but only time will tell how useful this blog becomes and how much communication Dmoz really opens up with those that submit their URLs for inclusion to the Dmoz directory.
