Yahoo "Open Search" Sound And Fury, But Nothing Yet...

Interesting post from Yahoo yesterday. They intend to make their search results a bit more "open". They say that eventually you'll be able to add reviews, small photos, and other data to your Yahoo listings.

Yahoo Adds New Meta Tag, More Control Over Your Search Engine Listings

by Scott Goodyear
www.MarketPosition.com

Do you have a listing in Yahoo's Directory? Does the description of your site work well for their directory but not so well when customers are performing searches for your products or services? In response to last year's announcement by Microsoft to support a NOODP or No Open Directory/Dmoz tag, Yahoo has created a "no Yahoo Directory" tag.

MyBlogLog.com Acquired By Yahoo!

By Scott Goodyear

Yahoo recently bought the blog widget company MyBlogLog.com. This is another step in the consolidation of the various blog and social media technologies among the major search engines. I think the premise behind MyBlogLog is promising however there are some problems in it's current state. In this post, I'll point out why you might love MyBlogLog or why you might decide to leave it off your site or blog for the time being.

by Richard Drawhorn

In a recent entry in their search blog, Yahoo! announced the introduction of a new version of their search crawler, Yahoo! Slurp. The new spider is "faster" and "more efficient" according to Yahoo!, which is good news for web site owners since it should consume less bandwidth while crawling their site.

Planet Ocean Communications, the top-rated source of search engine marketing information.

Last month you reported that none of the major search engines were following nofollow tags. Since that time, I've heard reports that some people are seeing nofollowed links show up in their backlinks. What's going on?

By Richard Drawhorn

Yahoo Beta: Deep Search and Subscription based web sites.

By Scott Goodyear

Yahoo is now beta testing a new search service called Deep Search. Deep Search is an opportunity for subscription based web sites to be indexed by a major search engine as currently search engine spiders are unable to login/scan through password protected websites. It appears that this may be a great opportunity for lead generation for this type of site as well. At the time of this writing there were seven sources that one could choose from in order to search on excerpts from premium/subscription article content: Consumer Reports, IEEE Publications, the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, the New England Journal of Medicine, Forrester Research, and The Street.

Yahoo Mindset: New Shopping and Research Tool.

By Scott Goodyear

Yahoo has introduced a new beta search service called Mindset. Mindset is a further attempt toward the true personalization of search engine results beyond local. Currently when you perform a normal Yahoo web search, you are left with search results that are based on the proprietary Yahoo search algorithm. With Mindset you can further tweak these results using a slider so that the results can be geared toward a more commercial/shopping based search or a more research/informational need. There are even gradients in between purely shopping and purely research search preferences.

Yahoo Finally Makes the Big Change and Drops Google

Industry analysts and search engine marketers have seen it coming since last year. Ever since Yahoo acquired Overture, who had previously acquired Inktomi, FAST, and AltaVista, it was obvious that Yahoo would be dropping its long-time partner Google. After all, why buy all that search technology if you aren't going to use it?

Yahoo Pricing Change

By now readers of the MarketPosition newsletter are well acquainted with iProspect, the leading Boston-based search engine positioning services firm. Their CEO, Fredrick Marckini is an occasional contributor to this newsletter and author of the book "Search Engine Positioning." Fredrick alerted us to this important development in Yahoo's Express Service pricing, so we wanted to give credit where credit was due. Here is what we found:

Yahoo Dramatically Changes Their Format. What to do Now?

At the end of September Yahoo made some sweeping changes to their service. Something that they haven't done in years. Since Yahoo receives more traffic than any other search engine or directory on the Web, you must pay careful attention to changes at this service.

Submitting To Yahoo: Avoid a Costly Trap!

Yahoo Web Pages Drops Inktomi in favor of Google

Yahoo has long used Inktomi to provide results for searches that are not initially found in its directory. On July 4th, Yahoo declared independence from Inktomi and switched to using Google.com for matches displayed after its category and directory listings. Since Yahoo is the most popular search site on the Web, this is a significant development for Google.com.

Yahoo changes their ranking system

Yahoo, the most popular search engine on the Web, recently reversed the way they do default searches. In the past, a search for "online shopping" would look for Web sites which contained the phrase "online shopping" in Yahoo's summary description of the Web site.

Update on Yahoo and Domain Names

The "rumor" I passed on about Yahoo potentially rejecting sites that didn't have their own domain name is NOT true according to a Yahoo official. They claim to judge each site on content and design. But notice that Yahoo is still a beauty contest - if your site is a fiasco you've been meaning to fix, you might wish to wait to submit it until you have made the Web site tighter. Also expect to submit more than one in many cases.
