I think that this is a great post and that the diversity of links is very important. I also think that reputation across all links becomes more and more important as time goes on. If you employ what I would term a 360 degree strategy combining blogs, social media, articles etc, then you are sure to find success, but it will obviously take time and will very much rely on the non-directory side being interesting to the viewer.
